The stage was bare, with black curtains. Props and furniture were minimal, but always used effectively. The recorded music was of good quality and supported the singers well. Lighting was always sensitive, precise and attractive. Costumes/Makeup/Hair were all well chosen for duets, ensemble, etc. Some very fast changes were made impeccably, with no apparent hiccups and the cast always looked good.
Nice, breezy opening number Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, led by Shannon Hearn with solo sections and whole cast.
Colin Jackson sang Take That Look Off your Face well and with emotion; and Gill Varon gave us a lovely, animated I Get A Kick Out Of You.
Rosalind Holden and Shannon Hearn duetted on a very funny version of Popular, with great expression and lovely singing. Kay Colston sweetly sang The Rose for us.
Skid Row was a nicely co-ordinated cast number with great voices, movement and costume.
Then we had Putting On The Ritz, a terrific duet presented by Genilyn Menzies and Lyn Robinson-Menzies. Robert Hemphill was an excellent (if somewhat hairy) Fester for The Moon And Me and Sandra Mortimer gave a smooth and sexy Fly Me To The Moon…lovely voice.
Peter Brooker entranced us with the ironic number I’m Still Here. He was followed by Zak singing Wait A Bit, a beautiful reflective song.
Seasons Of Love was a strong finish to ACT I. It was well co-ordinated and was a good showcase for the different voices.
Peter, in flamboyant style, led the cast in a lovely opening to ACT II…There She Goes/Fame..
Lyn gave a lovely rendition of the fabulous number, I Am What I Am; and Genilyn performed If My Friends Could See Me Now with great singing and movement.
Rosalyn Holden’s I’ll Give My Life For You was beautifully sung; and All That Jazz, by Linda Stanley-Smith and Sandra was an interesting presentation…full of contrasts…but it worked !
Hard Knock Life was a good ensemble number with Peter scene-stealing as Miss Hannigan.
Michelle Whitehead gave a gentle rendition of Send In The Clowns, Broadway Baby was great fun, Shannon sang a strong, sensitive Everything I Know and then came Peter’s hilarious parody number, The Boy from…
The finale, One Day More, was a vigorous, rich interpretation that was a fitting close to the show.
The show’s title, Musical Rebels, was intriguing; and we were not disappointed. Zak, Emma and Kelly have created something really special. So many of the numbers had a novel and sometimes challenging interpretation. But the cast were so much at home with their songs and characters that it all worked beautifully and truthfully. The standards of singing and presentation were extremely high and much praise is due to you all.
