Unity Drama present a musical variety show split into four sections with age range starting from 8 upwards.
The stage was draped in rich purple curtains and a raised platform at the back with steps each side. The curtain was carried on the front flats with swags each side. It was plain classy and effective. Set Design Philip Walkden, Keira Markland and Lexie Smith. The costumes were kept simple with red sparkly waistcoats and black trousers, then for certain numbers other items of clothing added. Costume by Pippa Ainsworth and Carol Kirkpatrick. Lighting was effective and helped the show along - occasionally some of the songs I could not hear. Sound Spectre Live Events Ltd.
Choreography was by Amellia-Rose Payne and Ruby Leader. Directors were Neo Leach, Keira Markland and Philip Walkden. It takes a lot of work to put together a programme like this. It was split into four sections. Longest Running Musical, Modern Jukebox, Classics and Films. With a cast of 27 and 27+ songs I will just highlight a few.
The cast were Alice Rueda, Amellia-Rose Payne, Effie Blunt, Ellie Camac, Evie Coleman, Fraser Parrock, Isabelle Cunliffe, Isla Parrock, Jack Farrell, Keira Markland, Lacie Horsman, Lexie Smith, Lilly Pearson, Logan Smith, Lottie Smith, Lydia Blunt, Mckenzie Payne, Neo Leach, Neri Wijerante, Nyarai Webber, Philip Walken, Poppy Lucas, Ruby Leader, Sophia O’Connell, Tayla Smith and Tilly Royse.
The first section was Longest Running Musicals-Overture/ All That Jazz featured Logan, Ellie, Evie, Neri, Poppy, Lilly, Keira, Amellia-Rose, Lexie and Ruby went down well and the audience loved it, followed by If I Were A Rich Man from Fiddler’ which had Jack coming through the audience and giving a fine performance. Jack is certainly growing in confidence on the stage. Lexie and Logan then gave us Marry The Man Today from Guys and Dolls. Working well together. We were then treated to When I Grow Up by the full cast which was delightful.
The second section was Modern Jukebox. Opening with Problem/Can’t Feel My Face from & Juliet. Neo and Ruby gave us the Dear Evan Hanson song If I Could Tell Her and Fraser sang Earth Song by Michael Jackson. This section was finished with Here I Go Again with full cast from Rock of Ages rocking it.
The Second Act section three was “Classics Opening” with the Moulin Rouge Welcome To the Moulin Rouge with full cast - lovely opener. Followed by Any Dream Will Do from Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat with cast and sung by Neo was a delight. Lottie, Alice, Sophia, Lacie, Isla, Effie and Nyara then performed So Long Farewell from the Sound of Music.
The last and fourth section opened with Into The Woods Your Fault. With Kiera, Amellia-Rose, McKenzie, Lexie and Lydia. Quite a complicated piece well done. This section was finished with Footloose by the full cast. The group certainly looked to be enjoying themselves and the space around the audience was used throughout the performance and the audience encouraged to join in. Thank you for the invite from my guest Ursula and I.
