This concert by the group had a little something for everyone. Solos and medleys from several West End blockbusters such as Wicked, Mamma Mia and Les Miserables were interspersed with solos from lesser known productions such as Summer Stock, Spamalot and Tick, Tick.... Boom! It was pleasing to hear some of the lesser known songs performed rather than the show stoppers usually heard.
There were several highlights for myself including “There’s a Fine, Fine Line” from Avenue Q, sung by Frances Wood, “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” from Spamalot, sung by Andrew Fearon, and “On My Own” from Les Miserables, sung by Rosie Taylor. That is not to lessen the quality and impact of the solos and ensemble pieces also performed, but not mentioned, which were also up to a high standard.
Also worthy of mention was the medley from “Grease” which was performed by the junior section of the group, in which they grabbed their opportunity to shine. Indeed it was very pleasing to see so many of the younger element taking solos and chorus positions – a sign of a healthy future for the group, hopefully.
Cast and soloists, dressed as they were in dinner jackets and evening dresses, were a contrast to the informal nature of the cabaret style seating in the auditorium which enhanced the enjoyment of the evening.
Music from Freda Carney’s combo was well played and sympathetic to the needs of the performers. Lighting was appropriate to the nature of the music, and sound quality was excellent, with each and every word crisp and clear. A thoroughly entertaining evening – well done Jarrow.
