This show would probably have been better titled as a Summer concert as it was indeed a very enjoyable prelude to Summer – even the weather behaved itself that day. The first half of the Show featured the whole society singing well-known numbers from many shows or film soundtracks. Men were immaculate in evening dress, with the ladies also suitably dressed. I was particularly impressed by the individual solos and duets given by Sharon Gauld, Lynn and Alan Tompkins, ending with a magnificent rendition by Barbara Simpson with “I Dreamed a Dream”
The second half of the Revue comprised of a selection of numbers from various well-known shows, one of which was “The Merry Widow” which has beautiful music, very well sung in this instance, but sadly seldom performed nowadays. Is this because of the lack of audience appeal, or perhaps because of the preponderance of modern (!) musicals that seem to be more popular? All Societies need to maintain their audience base, and I felt that Walkerville, by including “The Merry Widow” was perhaps reminding ourselves that the older-type shows can still be enjoyable.
I thoroughly enjoyed the evening, particularly the playing in “cabaret style” with the performers moving musically amongst us, the audience. My congratulations go to the joint production team and the skills of Gareth Miller. On a sad note I noted that Gareth is now finding the pressures of employment means that he is standing down as Musical Director. He will be a great loss to the Society.
Once again, thank you for a very enjoyable evening.
