A splendid eclectic concert of songs from West End Musicals, Operetta and Opera provided a superb evening of music to suit everyone’s taste. GWOS were joined for the evening by Vocal Score in this Musical Memories showcase tribute to Martin Jones, a long standing member of both groups who passed away suddenly last September aged fifty eight. The first half of songs from well known musicals My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, West Side Story et al by GWOS gave their Chorus plenty of scope to show their vocal harmony. Superb solo’s from Patricia Head (Vilja-Merry Widow) and Caroline Causier (The Laughing Song-Die Fledermaus) were outstanding but the full range of vocal talent was highlighted with other solo’s, quartet’s, quintet’s etc, and confirmed the Societies depth of talent. Four delightful songs from a well established Vocal Score produced a different sound much appreciated by the audience. An arrangement of ‘The Green Leaves of Summer’ by Martin Jones was a poignant reminder of his talent. The second half followed the pattern of the first with music and much loved songs by Straus and Gilbert and Sullivan from GWOS and four more items from Vocal Score including a Beatles favourite ‘Yesterday’ again an arrangement by Martin Jones. An arrangement of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ medley by Martin and a joint finale by both groups of ‘Les Miserables’ brought the curtain down on a superb musical evening. The whole concert was accompanied on the piano by the excellent Joy Reeve in a marathon performance. The Musical Director for GWOS was wonderful Sue Black who doubled as compere and her quirky humour was much enjoyed by the performers and audience alike.
