This was a wide and varied musical programme celebrating the Society’s Golden Jubilee whilst also marking their return to the Motherwell Theatre after an absence of two years. As narrator, Edward Pearson Snr. eloquently steered us on a musical journey down memory lane recalling stories, shows and musical numbers performed by the Society, revisiting many successes over the past fifty years which included their very first show “The Mikado”, and then looking to the future. The company set the tone for the evening in opening with “That’s Entertainment” and thereafter delighted us with light opera, traditional and more modern musicals presented with fine choral singing, ensembles, duets and solos. Particular highlights for me included Jim Keenan with his solos from “South Pacific”, the selection from “Chess” led by the company with Anne Blackwood and Roland Russell and Richard Hughes in his ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’. There were equally many other great performances and great musical selections too numerous to mention. The company brought the show to a natural conclusion by reminding us “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and “God Bless Us Everyone” which is from their forthcoming production of “A Christmas Carol”. Music was provided by a small ensemble led superbly by Musical Director, David Fisher. He was joined by Stephen Gaughan as Director/Choreographer and I look forward to seeing more of his work. Congratulations to the cast, production team and all behind scenes. Here’s to another fifty years!
