Directed and produced by Gareth Cole, NK Theatre Arts’ production of "Music of the Movies" was a delightful experience I had the pleasure of attending at The Forum Theatre, Romiley. This showcase featured an array of songs from beloved movies, many of which had the audience joyfully singing along.

Upon my arrival, I was warmly greeted by Kerry Day, the Artistic Director of NK Theatre Arts. Unlike traditional theatre seating, the company opted for a cabaret-style setup with tables and chairs, perfectly complementing the overall ambiance of the production. Audience members could purchase refreshments throughout the performance without any distraction—a testament to the efficiency of the front-of-house staff.

The stage was minimally set, featuring an arrangement of chairs for the performers. Their entrances, exits, and performance focus were executed with professionalism, displaying a true sense of camaraderie. The seamless transitions between numbers highlighted the production’s excellent rehearsal process. Ben Wicks ensured impeccable sound and volume levels, while David Jarvis’ creative lighting design added another layer of brilliance, enhancing each vocal number's intention.

Act 1 opened with a stunning rendition of "A Star is Born" by Mark Davies and Helena Frances Davies. Their vocal projection, control, and expression were flawless from start to finish. Helena’s performances throughout the evening were marked by confidence, tone, control, timing, and engaging facial expressions. Mark’s ability to perform live in this cabaret-style setting was admirable, showcasing his attention to detail and musical accuracy, especially during his entertaining rendition of the "Top Gun Anthem."

Nickie Simms’ powerful performance of "Speechless" from Aladdin was particularly memorable. Her vocal strength, control, and stage presence captivated the audience. Nickie’s consistency in vocals and performance throughout the evening was commendable.

Other standout performances included Beth MacDonald’s emotive "All By Myself" from Bridget Jones, Nathan Nugent’s soulful "My Girl," Megan Ormiston’s heartfelt "I Will Always Love You" from The Bodyguard, and Kieran Hickey’s tender "When You Say Nothing at All" from Notting Hill.

While the evening featured numerous solo numbers, I personally would have enjoyed more duets or group performances. However, the group number "I Put a Spell on You" from Hocus Pocus, sung by Jen Davies, Brooke Heaton, and Jenni Wallis, was a highlight. Their ability to harmonise, know their entrances, and engage the audience was exceptional.

A special thank you to everyone involved in this production. Your stage presence, vocals, and overall performance were a delight to watch. Thank you again to NK Theatre Arts for the warm welcome and hospitality. I look forward to your future productions.
