Taking the theme of the four seasons, this concert included opera, standard classics, musicals and pop, indeed something for everyone.
The company were smartly dressed as was the stage with a good use of lighting effects and colour to create mood. We were transported from spring through to summer, autumn and winter with colour change, some simple props, good musicians and, of course, an excellent choice of music.
The staging was effective and slick, and the programme of 32 numbers flowed well. From the opening number “Seasons of Love” it was obvious that the standard of singing was excellent and every one of the ensemble numbers which followed was equally well performed.
With a concert it is always difficult to single out solo & group performances,as they were all good, but my own personal favourites were “Springtime for Hitler” (Andrew Emerson), “April Showers” (the chorus), “Our Last Summer” (Bill Collins, Steve Laws & Allan Reed), “Summertime” (Kirstie Swirles & Fiona Havercroft), “California Dreaming” (the chorus) “Forever Autumn” (the chorus) and “We Need a Little Christmas” (the chorus). A special mention to Kirstie Swirles for her arrangement of “April Showers” it was beautiful, and to Steve Laws for superb arrangements of “Forever Autumn” and the finale “Seasons in the Sun”.
The entire company looked confident and seemed to be enjoying performing this very enjoyable evening’s entertainment. Well done.
