It was a true pleasure to attend the recent concert presented by the St Andrews Operatic Society, held within the welcoming embrace of St Andrews Church (though I did forget my cushion!) The evening was marked by a wonderful camaraderie amongst performers and audience alike, and a thoughtfully curated programme that balanced familiar favourites with a few delightful surprises.
From the outset, it was clear that much care had gone into the selection of repertoire, as has come to be expected from Musical Director Ken Matthews. The arrangements throughout the concert were nothing short of beautiful, allowing the society’s vocalists to shine both individually and in harmony. The balance between voices was consistently well-judged, with careful attention paid to phrasing and dynamics. Each number was approached with a clear sense of style, and transitions between pieces were executed with professionalism. Beautiful solos complimented the choral pieces, with Eric Stephenson performing Down the Salley Gardens; Kim Storey performing Pieu Jesu; Susan Antcliff performing Those were the Days; Michael Beck reading Misalliance and Kathy Price performing Someone else’s Story.
Of particular note was an organ performance from Colin Wood which I always very much look forward to, which provided a moment of serene reflection amidst the lively proceedings. The organist’s sensitive touch and command of the instrument brought both gravitas and gentle lyricism to the concert, earning well-deserved applause from the appreciative audience.
The overall atmosphere in the venue was warm and welcoming, a testament to the society’s commitment to making music accessible and enjoyable for all. The rapport between performers and audience was particularly heartening, enhancing the sense of community that is so vital to the success of any musical society.
In conclusion, the St Andrews Operatic Society are to be commended for delivering an evening of music that was both uplifting and expertly executed. Their concert demonstrated the best of amateur performance: passion, preparation, and a shared love of song. I look forward to their next concert at Christmas and HMS Pinafore to celebrate their 80th year.
