MURDER ON THE MENU by Bill Hand is a murder mystery set in ‘Dell’s Kitchen’ where we almost witness the murder of Artemus Ward, owner and publisher of Ward Books. During the course of the evening, members of the Ward family – all under suspicion for the murder – argue among themselves displaying greed, jealously and fear; all motives for murder! The audience are misled and entertained as they try to identify the culprit.
The set was excellent, well-constructed and decorated and a good replica of a New York restaurant. The red checked table clothes, New York pictures and plants gave the set a warm, cosy feeling. The props were realistic and well used, such as the glasses, ketchup container and specials blackboard.
The costumes were very good and in keeping with the characters such as smart blazer with matching handkerchief for Bernie, the young nephew, bright dress for Jeannie and smart business suit for Eileen the attorney. Dr Bullginger’s stars and stripes tights/leggings deserve a special mention!
The lighting was effective throughout and well controlled with a blackout for the time of the murder. There were very realistic sound effects for crashes coming from the kitchen.
This was an excellent production all round. All aspects, content, technical, quality of acting etc were first class. The evening flowed well with the set-up, the murder, a quiz and sum up, questions and then the reveal. The cast had good chemistry and everyone was confident and delivered their lines with enthusiasm. There was great pace throughout and the action didn’t flag from start to finish. Everyone was engaged and engaging and the audience were invited to be involved. Overall, another enjoyable evening’s entertainment from HAG.
