Movie Musicals was an ambitious and vibrant showcase by Ossett Youth Theatre, celebrating iconic songs from musical films and stage-to-screen favourites. Under the expert guidance of producers Sue and Jessica Winstanley, the evening featured strong performances across both junior and senior sections, offering variety, emotional depth, and impressive vocal and choreographic skill. The show featured excerpts from Wicked, Shrek the Musical, Dear Evan Hansen, Matilda, Beetlejuice, and The Greatest Showman, each met with enthusiasm and commitment by the cast.

ACT 1 HIGHLIGHTS

Wicked

The show opened with selections from Wicked, kicking off with a lively and well-executed “One Short Day.” Ellie Mitchell stood out in “Popular,” showcasing excellent comedic timing and strong vocals. “What Is This Feeling?” was delightfully performed, with the contrast between characters well played. “Dancing Through Life” added fluid choreography and a confident ensemble.

Shrek the Musical (Junior Section)

“I Know It’s Today” was beautifully sung by Olivia Richards, Mary Stones, and Harriet Ling, each bringing unique charm and character. “Who I’d Be” carried real emotional weight, and “Forever” brought a fun burst of energy from the Dragon and ensemble. “I’m A Believer” closed the segment with an upbeat, feel-good finish.

Dear Evan Hansen

“Anybody Have a Map” set a grounded tone, followed by a sensitive and vocally impressive “Waving Through a Window.” “Requiem” featured haunting harmonies and “You Will Be Found” was a particular highlight – emotionally charged, with lovely vocal blending and great ensemble energy.

ACT 2 HIGHLIGHTS

Matilda (Junior Section)

The junior performers returned with confidence and playfulness in “Miracle.” Alice Albiero was wonderfully theatrical in “Smell of Rebellion,” and Myla Warren’s “Quiet” was a poignant and controlled solo performance. “Revolting Children” ended the segment with infectious spirit and sharp group work.

Beetlejuice

One of the night’s standouts was “Say My Name,” performed by Alex Nunes and Lily Rush. This number was a true highlight—witty, well-paced, and filled with chemistry. Nunes in particular demonstrated excellent characterisation and impressive vocal range. “Dead Mom” brought emotional weight, and “That Beautiful Sound” delivered great comic timing.

The Greatest Showman

This final section brought cinematic scale and showmanship. “A Million Dreams” was sweetly delivered by younger cast members, and “The Greatest Show” was an exciting ensemble number. “Tightrope” brought tenderness and contrast, while “This Is Me” was a bold, affirming finale with full-cast commitment and strong vocals.

The lighting effectively set the tone and transitions between numbers  and the choreography was creative and age-appropriate throughout, with several standout moments. At times, tighter synchronisation and full commitment to movements across the ensemble would enhance visual impact.

Overall the sound was well-balanced, though there were occasional issues with microphones not being activated in time, leading to some initial lines or phrases being lost. Costumes: Generally appropriate and helped define characters, though caution is advised to ensure designs don’t directly identify specific shows where licensing restricts such representation.

Movie Musicals was a lively evening that displayed the growing talent within Ossett Youth Theatre. With standout solo performances, clever ensemble work, and an evident passion for musical theatre, the production left audiences thoroughly entertained. With a few technical tweaks, future showcases will only grow stronger. Congratulations to the cast, crew, and creative team for another production full of energy, heart, and theatrical flair.
