Worksop Light Op. presented NODA Pantomimes Mother Goose at the Acorn Theatre, Worksop. This was a light hearted, children’s pantomime that followed the story of Mother Goose and her son Billy.
Taking on the ambitious duties of both Director and Pantomime Dame, Lloyd Hawkins did well in providing continuous action, simple setting, spatial consistency and visual variety throughout; coordinating both principal and ensemble action nicely. The orchestration and sound from the band was well controlled and executed, displaying capable talent from the Musical Director, Brady Mould. Whilst the choreography team provided excellent movement that showcased the fantastic dance ability from both dance troupe and ensemble alike, a clear strength for this group.
Entertaining principal performances were provided throughout with Joanne Lassmans (Billy Goose) and Lloyd Hawkins (Mother Goose) steering the show; keeping momentum and providing many enjoyable, colourful moments.
Costumes, use of makeup, set and props were consistent, vibrant and well sourced, adding to the overall visual enjoyment. Backstage work was generally handled well and provided minimal interruption to the performance. Whilst technically the use of lighting worked well and was nicely controlled. The use of SFX generally worked well, however sound balance during musical numbers needed some technical improvement.
Whilst I found the depth of plot and characters simplistic, Worksop successfully delivered with fine Pantomime interpretation; full of enthusiasm, energy and fun.
On reflection, the most enjoyable part about this production for me was the attitude of Worksop Light Op. themselves. From the moment we entered the lovely Acorn Theatre right through to the final curtain call, Worksop created a warm and friendly environment that relayed their passion, enthusiasm and excitement for Community Theatre. In true Pantomime spirit, Worksop displayed a keen desire to provide something both fun and entertaining for all to enjoy (both on and off stage), defunct of pretence, which completely embodied the essence of the Community Theatre. I found the entire experience to be completely humbling and endearing, something Worksop should be immensely proud of. Well done to all involved and keep up the good work.
