This ‘Mother Goose’ written by Peter Denyer is a traditional version and contains everything a good panto should have . It had evil and nastiness in the character of the Demon of Discontent which was well portrayed by Ken Richardson in what is now becoming his recognised role as the baddie. The good was very well displayed by Ken’s wife Helen as the lovely Fairy Goosedown. I must say that these two really work well together and were very much appreciated by the large audience. Sharon Gault in the role of Jill Goodheart and Lisa Givens as Billy Goose are used to working together and they both matched each other and sang very well and eventually ended up together (as of course we all knew they would, because it’s pantomime) .
Alan Tomkins as Mother Goose gave his usual polished performance and really got the audience on his side. I do like to see Alan in this type of role as he is becoming a very accomplished Dame getting all the right mannerisms and winning over the children.
The principals were well supported by David Parrack as Squire Goodheart who really didn’t want his daughter to marry Billy but relented in the end and was happy for that to happen, and Michael Roche as King Gander .
I must give a mention to Caroline Gallon who was excellent as Priscilla the goose. A faultless performance, quacking in all the right places.
A very large chorus supported the principals well with some very good singing and movement.
The dancers under the expertise of Helen Wilson added well to the overall production.
With first class direction, very good musical direction, attractive sets and a good lighting plot this was a very entertaining afternoon’s entertainment which was, I am sure from the applause of the audience, much enjoyed by all.Well done to Ann, Peter, Helen, Christine and all at Walkerville.
Looking forward to ‘Guys and Dolls’
