“Mother Goose”, as Aldwyth Pearson the director/producer reminded us, is probably the oldest of all pantomimes with its origins in the days of the Roman Empire. I can just imagine a fierce centurion looking forward to putting on his “Mater Anserina” costume. I am so glad with reports of snow on the roads that we were able to make it from Blackburn to Slaidburn despite the sat nav demanding we approach the village by the narrowest lanes on the way across. We returned by a much more sensible route. Having enjoyed a reviving pre-show drink in “Hark To Bounty” we arrived at the Village Hall.It is a striking venue. It is a rare treat to be entertained to a performance of such honesty. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The sense of community was tangible. I can only echo the words of a well established player in the programme who cites great friendships, camaraderie, personal development and confidence building as significant benefits of performing with Slaidburn Players. The show was imbued from start to finish with every one.
The curtain opened to reveal the villagers of Little Hassle going about their business. All the chorus were enjoying themselves immensely. When audiences see players obviously having a good time it has the effect of making them happy too and wanting to join in with the fun. The younger members of the team were a delight, confidently supporting each other in their moves. Then onto the stage bounded John Sharp as Mother Goose. He was completely in control of his role. Confident, moving instinctively around the stage and making us laugh out loud he was a joy to behold. This was not a one dimensional “silly dame” performance since John was adept at adding neat touches of appropriate emotion at times that enhanced the intentions of the script. As the Demon Of Discontent Alex West was in his element clearly relishing the chance to be a baddy. His costume, make up and skull-topped staff adding much to the success of his character. Such parts are written tongue in cheek as we all know the baddy always gets their comeuppance in pantomimes. “Oh yes we do!” Yet we actually liked the demon due to Alex’s witty interpretation. Then enter stage right Sarah Parker as Fairy Goosedown. The audience warmed to her immediately. Sarah was the epitome of a good fairy, beautiful, sassy and oozing optimism; Sarah successfully played the audience too, not always an easy thing to achieve. She is a talented performer. Billy Goose played by Kim-Alexandra Hanley became our friend as soon as she stepped on to the stage. Exhorting us to shout out to him every time anyone dared to approach The Plant, brilliantly brought to life by Ben Stockdale. Squire Goodheart and Jill Goodheart, Brant Middleton and Chloe Payne were well drawn characters that fitted well into the overall feel of the production. Both were assured in their playing. As the Queen of Goosleand Heather Harrison was determined and imperious. And so to Priscilla The Goose, hard done by by Mother Goose yet still managing to forgive her, Issy Bristow conjured up a marvellous creation. Taking every opportunity to throw in quacks the audience loved her!
Everyone who contributed to this outstanding entertainment must be congratulated for their dedication. Val Sharp for managing the stage so well, the costumier and their team under the direction of Issy and to each and everyone of the backstage crew many of whom also appeared as characters in the play; not forgetting the wonderful foh team of course. Truly a team effort. My congratulations too to Janet Holland whose tunes contributed so much to our appreciation.
And last, but by no means least, a huge thankyou to Aldwyth for putting it all together and ensuring it was such a memorable experience, truly eggs-tra special This was the epitome of what community drama should be about.
Gillian and are already greatly looking forward to next year. Thank you, Everyone.
