R.A.T.S. had decided to provide two One Act Plays for their Spring Production and it turned out to be a very good decision.
“Mixed Doubles,” the evening’s first play, written by Lynn Brittney was one of her plays in the “Wine and Wisdom” Series. Her very accurate observations of the way people react in many situations was apparent in this very funny script.
The piece opened to a simple but well constructed, solid set. This was to be used in both plays with a change of stage furniture. The stage-crew always create a very substantial, appropriate set, for all their productions. They are to be congratulated , especially as they have such a limited area in which to work.
“ Mixed Doubles” Directed and Produced by Chris Kenrick and Judy Freeman, involved a cast of 13 actors who played their diverse roles with confidence, much enthusiasm and skill. We, the audience were completely immersed in the emerging story line which was played at a very good pace although there was some hesitancy with dialogue. At times the playing area appeared too small when all the cast were on stage . Having said that, each character was very well delineated and all contributed to a very entertaining play.
The second play “ Guidance” written by the very prolific, experienced and talented playwright Bob Tucker, was advertised as an hilarious, racy farce and this was certainly true in all respects. The pace was non-stop and each character left the audience in no doubt as to the storyline. They complemented each other as the piece progressed. Such was the high standard of all involved I hesitate to single anyone out but Rebecca Parkinson as Ms. Loveless brought out every nuance from her demanding role. Her timing was first class and her performance brought loud guffaws from all in the audience. Director, Dave Procter is very experienced on stage himself and he has ensured his cast made the most of this very funny script.
This society epitomizes all that is good about Amateur Theatre. The productions performed within the limitations imposed are first class and I always look forward to my visits. Congratulations once again, on a very enjoyable evening and thank you for making my wife and I so welcome.
