As you enter the auditorium there always seems to be a great buzz of expectancy at Crash Bang Wallop productions.  Tonight was no exception.

This was an evening to remember, with very good performances from a talented young cast.  As the Viet Cong close in on Saigon, the new girl Kim begins work at the Dreamland bar.  From the beginning Ruby Hoggarth gave a heartfelt performance, singing and moving with style.  Ellen, Gigi and Thuy, Rachael Egan, Lauren Fawcett and Alexandra Logan gave great support throughout. Joseph Wetherall tackled the challenging role of American Marine Chris with good characterisation and singing, and was ably supported by Luc Van Der Voet as his close friend John.

The role of the engineer was portrayed with great enthusiasm by Megan Gray.  Although she acted and sang well this role being played by a female did not quite work for me.  The chorus throughout supported the leading characters with fine singing and acting.  There is a shortage of space at this theatre but they managed excellently, with bright and colourful sets and costumes.  The music was in the very capable hands of Jeremy Harbottle and his talented orchestra.  Director Dan Brooks should be very proud of this production.  The hard work put in by all concerned was very evident.

As a footnote, I am surprised this show has been released as a Schools Edition considering the subject matter, but that aside this was a wonderful evening’s entertainment.  Well done to everybody.
