Due to the success of their 40th anniversary celebration “Miscast”, CLTG decided to revisit the format of the “Broadway MCC Theater Miscast Cabaret”, giving a further opportunity for performers to sing songs from roles they’d never normally play due to age, gender or opportunity.

The cast of 18 delivered a varied programme put together by director Rebecca which included an interesting mixture of numbers from well-known musicals such as “Hairspray”, “Jersey Boys”, “Oklahoma” and “Anything Goes” to lesser known numbers from “Be More Chill” and a new song to me “The Song in Every Musical that No-one likes”. No one was credited as MD or choreographer so I'm assuming Rebecca handled those roles too, she is a very talented theatre practictioner.

The stage lighting complemented the numbers and the sound quality was good. Staging of the numbers was done using mainly boxes and stools incorporated into the choreography on an empty stage with some staging of numbers moving through the audience, movement was well put together and confidently performed by the cast, “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat” was particularly good. I have previously referred to Chinami Smith as a one woman orchestra and this occasion was no different, her talent is outstanding and she provided perfect accompaniment throughout.

The MC “hat” was shared amongst the cast as they took us through the programme. It is difficult to single out performers in a company based production as everyone worked hard and gave good performances, there were some beautiful solos, duets and group numbers as well as some comedy thrown in – who could forget “Mama I’m a Big Girl Now”, “Can’t Say No” and “The Confrontation”!  All of the solo performances were well sung but the outstanding performance of the night in my opinion was “Heaven on their Minds” by Emily Smith – wow. The compilation pieces of  “Songs We’re Too Old to Sing” and “The Finale to End all Finales” were well put together, well executed and the perfect ways to finish each Act.

The audience were very appreciative of the varied evening’s entertainment they had been presented, many congratulations to Rebecca and her support team.
