South Shields G&S visits are always a pleasure and this once again was testament to that premise.

In the ideal setting of the Pier Pavilion, South Shields the society shone once again with an excellent concert following on from their 75th anniversary venture last year. The members ‘scrubbed up well’ and looked resplendent throughout the whole evening.

In their concert, SSGS went the extra mile with an eclectic mix of well known and lesser known shows leaving the sold out audience members wanting to see that show they were unfamiliar with.

Featuring choral and solo work from such shows as Little Shop of Horrors, Singing in the Rain, West Side Story, Anything Goes, Sweeney Todd, Spring Awakening, Billy Elliott (the poignant ‘Letter’ is always a tear jerker), Dear Evan Hansen and Miss Saigon the first Act was a Smorgasbord of hit after hit with superb harmonies and excellent movement by the cast to Julie Cummings’ choreography.

A quick word about the music by Jonny Winter and his combo – as always they were excellent and well balanced throughout accompanying the singers and never overpowering them. I doff my imaginary hat to Jonny for his expertise and his empathy.

The second Act once again was a selection of lesser known but nevertheless superb shows and themes such as ‘The Sixties’, ‘Golden Age’, Heathers, Chorus Line ( I particularly enjoyed ‘What I did for Love’ from this selection), Rent and finishing off with a selection of what is one of my firm favourites, Come From Away.

I’ve deliberately shied away from mentioning any soloist as this was very much a collective effort by the group. It worked and it worked magnificently.

Well done to the whole production team and Caroline Corkin for bringing it all together.
A brilliant concert that will live long in my memory. Thank you SSGS, once again you excelled…
