Still forced out of its preferred venue, Clydebank Town Hall, CMS still managed to attract a near-capacity audience for this, its thirty-second production (and twenty-three from the Junior Section) in its temporary home. The show as adapted by Stephen Fry, is a delightful combination of farce and good songs, all ably handled by the various talents in this Club. Most have had long association with the Club, and it proves that to treat members well will reap benefits in loyalty. Bill Snibson (Alex Long), for example, who was suitably blasé in his part, started at aged six in the mid 80s, and Sally (FIona MacCallum) joined the Juniors in 1997 — obviously one gets good training in the Juniors. Duchess (Katrina Butcher) was suitably aristocratic and imperious, while Sir John (David L. Brown), although slightly pompous and short-tempered had enough cunning to fox his long-time love and let Sally and Bill get together. Gerald and Jacqueline (Iain Campbell and Lynne Seagrave) provided stupidity (him) and glamour (her) of an upper-class variety, while Sir Jasper (Ian Stewart) bumbled beautifully. There is not a huge amount for the chorus, but as servants, pub customers and fellow guests at the Ball, they were excellent. Good singing all round, and with many jokes — some of them ‘running gags’ as portrayed by Parchester (David Simmons) — the audience thoroughly enjoyed the show. Hopefully when the Town Hall is again available, some new Dumbarton audience will migrate East, having enjoyed CMS’s visits over a couple of years. Very well done for a happy evening’s entertainment.
