This extremely popular musical comedy with its array of classic foot tapping tunes is always guaranteed to please the audience with its storyline in the mode of  ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ merging a little into ‘My Fair Lady’ and featuring the idiosyncrasies of the traditional British class system

Sam Jeffrey as Bill Snibson was every bit the lovable cockney character with fine comedy entering the world of toffee nosed aristocracy with which he was totally unfamiliar. Poppy Cooksey as Sally Smith completed this geezer and gal combination in a well matched pair. Glynis Smith gave a show stealing performance as the dominant matriarchal Duchess.

Others in the principal line up gave some good performances including Cora Jackson as Jaquie and Paul Robinson as Gerald. Darryl Bradford’s make up resulted in making him look a little too ghostly in the role of Sir Jasper. Andy Brown as Parchester was at times difficult to hear with a degree of over exuberant acting, though in an excitable manner gave a fine rendition of “The Family Solicitor”

The big chorus numbers “An English Gentlemen “, “The Sun has Got His Hat On”, and “Lambeth Walk” were enjoyable both vocally and visually and as for the whole production were supported by a fine balanced orchestra.  Charming duets from Bill and Sally in “Me & My Girl” and “Hold my Hand” were agreeably performed and received.

A competently choreographed “Song of Hareford”, Love Makes the World Go Round”, and confidently enacted “Leaning on the Lampost” along with other musical numbers included some imaginative dance routines by the principal line up supported by the full ensemble.

Impressive costumes both in variety and colour enhanced the overall effect, though for some scenes the set and props were not always in keeping with the period.

The audience left the theatre humming many of the memorable tunes having experienced an entertaining evening.
