This has to be one of my favourite shows with its larger than life characters, corny humour and excellent foot-tapping music. It isn’t an easy show to stage with its large sets and all the prescribed stage business and this was an even bigger challenge because of the small stage at this venue. The company, however, managed admirably and we had the car disappearing in the form of suitcases, the ancestral portraits coming alive and the hilarious use of the tiger skin rug. The voice projection was superb as I heard every word without the need for radio mikes. Well done for all that!
Dave Crump is a seasoned performer and his ‘cheeky on stage’ personality was ideal as Bill and he was well partnered by Rosie Coles as Sally. Richard Pritchett (Gerald) had the right facial expressions to suggest that he couldn’t cope with events around him and Debbie Crump (Jacqueline) led him a merry dance. Peter Dent (Parchester) did justice to the comedy song ‘The Family Solicitor’ and the rest of the cast played their parts very well.
Peter Smith and the small ensemble supplied some very sympathetic support and accompaniment for the singers although I did miss the big band sound for the main production numbers. It is necessary sometimes to restrict the number of musicians if societies are to continue and the keyboard playing couldn’t be faulted.
Congratulations and thank you for providing an excellent evening’s entertainment.
