Choosing to perform this very popular show provided GYTS with an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the extensive range of talents possessed by its young membership and their wonderful interpretation resulted in a brilliant example of musical theatre. Lucy Keirl, making her debut as Director, is to be congratulated for including several original touches which much enhanced this production. The contributions of Matthew Merrett, the Musical Director, were superb; through his acute awareness of the range of music in this show, his sensitive interpretations combined with the skills of the band ensured that the vocalists were provided with wonderful musical accompaniments. As well as taking on the role of Herbert Parchester, the amazing and energetic Luke Musson headed up the team of choreographers and dance captains that included Sophie Knowles, Sophie Bryne and Katie Muffett; together they devised the lively and innovative dance routines. This was an extremely well-cast production, with James Burrows playing the part of the cockney heir Bill Snibson with incredible energy and enthusiasm, whilst his girl, Sally Smith, played by Katie Muffet, captivated the audience with her simple sincerity and singing - her rendition of ‘Once you lose your heart’ was most moving. Sophie Bryne as Maria, Duchess of Dene, displayed the indomitable spirit often found in the nobility and similarly Ossian Huskinson delivered fine characterisation as Sir John Tremayne. Despite failing to tempt Bill away from Sally, the audience loved Annabel Cartwright’s vampish behaviour as Lady Jacqueline Carstone. James Coleman as The Hon Gerald Bolingbroke gave an excellent portrayal of a weak aristocratic effete. Alistair Cherry, as the geriatric Sir Jasper Tring, used the opportunity to acquaint himself with the process of ageing and prove himself capable of manoeuvring a wheel-chair!Those in supporting roles also acquitted themselves well with their contributions to this brilliant entertainment which justly deserved the rapturous applause at the conclusion of the show.
