This bright cheery tale of a cockney man’s rise from rags to riches had the audience smiling and their toes tapping right from the opening company number “A Weekend at Hareford”. Trevor Nicol as Bill Snibson made the perfect cheeky-chappy with good singing, dancing and comic timing. He was equally matched by Caroline MacPherson as his cockney girlfriend Sally Smith – I particularly enjoyed her rendition of the thoughtful “Once You Lose Your Heart”. Gavin McKay drew every ounce of comedy from the hapless Gerald Bolingbroke – especially in the energetic “The Sun Has Got his Hat On”. Kandee Fraser as the sexy, scheming Lady Jacqueline was a delight – especially in her sharp exchanges with Sally! Fiona Chapman as Maria, Duchess of Dene was the epitome of aristocratic elegance – as to the manner borne - and Leonard King as Sir John Tremayne was a perfect foil to her. Pete Bullock McKie as Hebert Parchester looked every inch the solicitor and his rendition of “The Family Solicitor” was hilarious. Strong support was given by Stephen Vincent (Sir Jasper Ting), Steven Kelly (Lord Battersby), Helen Barron (Lady Battersby) and Eddie Docherty (Charles, the Butler). Mention too must be made of Louise Munro in the cameo role of Mrs Brown, Sally’s landlady. Dancing by the whole company, as well as the five featured dancers, was very well done and attacked with gusto in the full company numbers “The Lambeth Walk” and “The Sun Has Got His Hat On”. Singing from all the cast, whether principal or chorus, was of the usual high standard expected from this talented company.
Well done Inverness Musical Theatre for another excellent show.
