I had forgotten how good the musical numbers in this show are and they certainly set my feet tapping. The opening chorus set the standard for the show and we were not disappointed. The singing and nimble footwork of Alistair Thomas as Bill Snibson and Pam Murray as Sally Smith in a well matched partnership led the way. Cockney accents were well sustained by both. Judith Hutchinson came across as a suitably managing Duchess unlike her counterpart Sir John, effectively played by John Doonan, who had to take to drink to combat her! Alex Kemp as the Family Solicitor scored in both looks and actions as he took to song and dance to solve problems. Claire Doonan as Lady Jacqueline startled more than Bill in her dishabille seduction number, having easily rolled out the foppish Gerald in pursuit of wealth and status. However Gerald played by Colin Povey ended up more than a match for her. Mike Dunn and Sue Rankine as Lord and Lady Battersby, carried their supporting roles with ease, as did Alan Stirling as Charles the Butler, and Moira Drummond as Mrs Brown. The show swung along at a good pace with good direction in movement in the Kitchen scene and the favourite Lambeth Walk number, and in bringing out the humour in the Library scene. Costumes and scenery were well suited to the era and contributed to a most enjoyable show.
