‘Me and My Girl’ is a real fun show, full of great characters, well known songs, lively dance numbers and a fine script. Whilst it needs a good supporting cast it does most definitely need a strong “Bill” to hold it all together. Robert Spencer, as Bill, did infact do just that. He was the perfect cheeky-chappie, his highly energetic, exuberant performance was superb. He excelled in all aspects of the role, had great comic timing and he obviously enjoyed being ‘Bill’! Suzanne Higgins was absolutely stunning as Sally, Bill’s feisty girlfriend. Her singing and dancing were exquisite, the scene in the Library with Bill was hilarious and the transformation from a cockney to a society lady was divine. Sarah Morrell was impressively regal as the Duchess of Dene as was Karl Brennen as Sir John Tremayne (loved the ‘drunk scene’ with Bill)! Julie Metcalfe was extremely provacative and flirtacious as Lady Jacqueline Carstone, her raunchy, sizzling seduction of Bill was deliciously scintillating and Bill’s reaction was priceless! Heath Parkin was first-rate as The Hon. Gerald Bolingbroke as was Andrew Moore as Parchester, the family solicitor. Richard Leivers - Sir Jasper Tring (great make-up), Glyn Daniels - Charles, the butler and Doug Melloy and Dawn Melloy - Lord & Lady Battersby were all splendid in their respective roles, as indeed, was the whole ensemble. All the musical numbers by the principals and the chorus members were extremely well delivered as were the accompanying lively, spirited dance routines which were excellently choreographed. The ‘Song of Hareford’ with the Ancestors in the Library lost a little impact when the ‘faces’ didn’t quite match those in the portraits but I’m sure this would be resolved. Stunning costumes and a great orchestra all added to make this a thoroughly fun-filled and entertaining show.
