From the opening number sung by society’s finest setting off for Hareford Hall, the scene was set for a highly entertaining performance – and so it proved to be. Experienced leads interpreted their roles confidently. Will Pollock, in his first show with SABOS, threw himself into the role of Bill Snibson, a dominant cockney determined to have his own way over his aunt and to have an outrageous time at the ball. His slick timing of lines ensured the audience were in stitches especially in the library scene. Catherine Brannen Usher, once more in the principal role, was in excellent form as the tap-dancing Sally. Their singing was well matched and their duet ‘Me and My Girl’ was a delight. Susan B. Russell enjoyed her role as Duchess Maria, giving her a more human face within her determination to ‘polish’ her nephew and setting a grand example of affinity with the past in ‘Men of Hareford’. She was well paired with Tom Russell, her real husband, as Sir John who was a perfect foil to her machinations. Iain Usher as the energetic Right Hon. Gerald and Chris Taylor as the money-centred Lady Jacqueline brought out the humour well. Ken Christie portrayed the idiosyncratic Family Solicitor Parchester wonderfully and with a light touch, giving a master class on how to exit a scene. These roles were ably supported by Lord and Lady Battersby, namely John Butterfield and Morag Robertson, Charles the Butler Craig McCallum, Sir Jasper Duncan Thomson, Mrs Brown Morag Mclintock and all the other socialites and servants. Good clear singing and movement were encased in settings that were spectacular and colourful. The show was fun, full of light and laughter and engaging throughout. This was another splendid effort from SABOS.
