This popular musical, featuring good old fashioned humour, a slightly believable story, and plenty of familiar songs, provided a very entertaining evening.
The leading characters were well chosen, with Martin Briggs in excellent form as the cheeky Cockney Bill Snibson, giving an energetic, enthusiastic, non-stop performance pulling the show along at a good tempo. Sophie Baldry as his girlfriend Sally Smith was a perfect match, acting and singing wonderfully. Liz Woolley, with her faultless diction made an imperious Duchess and her rendition of the “Song of Hareford” with her ancestors was first rate. Lindsay Mould as Sir John Tremayne gave able backup as the Duchess`s suitor. Adam Guest gave a hilarious portrayal of the solicitor Parchester. Clare Toska was particularly divine as the seductive Lady Jaqueline, and with Tom Halton as Gerald, they added their own particular comedy and glamour to the production.
The large chorus were excellent, and certainly added plenty of colour to the show, performing very effective choreography, particularly in the “Lambeth Walk”, with gusto.
With a restricted playing area, great credit goes to the stage crew whose efficient work enabled scene changes to be achieved quickly on an impressive set. Congratulations to Director Ross Lowe for bringing out the comedy and characterisations of all the cast.
