‘Me and My Girl’ is funny, it has great characters, good songs, lots of dancing, a good story line but, if you haven’t got a good “Bill” to hold it all together, you just haven’t got a show. However, in this production, Chris Grantham, as Bill, had it all. He had great comic timing, his singing and acting skills were excellent and the energetic athleticism he displayed was remarkable. He obviously enjoyed playing the role and must have put in a lot of time to practice and perfect the many techniques etc. that he performed (hope he didn’t incur too many bruises). There was a lovely chemistry between Bill and his girlfriend Sally, delightfully and endearingly played by Elizabeth Brookes. Her transformation from an East End cockney to a society lady was splendid. Anne Dunning was commandingly regal and every inch the Duchess of Dene, and Steve Dunning played to perfection the role of Sir John Tremayne. Two very stylish performances were executed by Ian Jennison as Parchester and Matthew Shaw as Gerald Bolingbroke. Both have excellent stage presence and a wonderful sense of ‘comedy’. Charlie Orme gave a very provocative, flirtacious and saucy delivery as Lady Jacqueline Carstone none more so than when attempting to seduce Bill, this scene was brilliantly executed and deliciously suggestive! Linda Jennison, Pete Bostock, Mike Osborne and Gordon Gell were all admirable in their respective roles, as indeed, was the whole ensemble. The many and varied costumes were stunning. An innovative and very effective set was designed by Carolyn Hardy and built by Ian Jennison and Richard Poole, assisted by many company members. All the musical numbers were extremely well delivered by each of the principals and by members of the chorus as were the accompanying lively dance routines. A thoroughly enjoyable show without a dull moment - “The Sun Had Got His Hat On” - definitely!!
