MATILDA THE MUSICAL JR: This musical is based on the book by Roald Dahl and has music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. It is a darkly comical musical set in the Crunchem School where reading is banned. The school is a place of fear and terror which Miss Trunchbull rules by terror and intimidation. The show appeals to audience of all ages but recommended for age 10 plus due to its violence and scary themes.
The set was brilliant with focal point of the school composed of a large metal frame with title board. Screens above showed pictures from the book on which the musical was based. The props were well sourced and used. The audience’s response to the large chocolate cake was an audible intake of breath.
The costumes, hair and make up were excellent, and the entire cast’s costumes enhanced their characters. Miss Trunchbull was padded well and looked perfect for the part in her tweed suit, stout shoes and monobrow. I loved Mrs Wormwood’s outrageous outfits and Mr Wormwood’s brash suit was brilliant. PE kits and school uniforms for the ensemble were just right.
The sound was goodand the music and singing under the direction of Ronan Cundy and George Green was first class.
This production was simply an outstanding experience. The staging and use of the space at Central Studio was creative and innovative. Tim Minchin’s catching and clever tunes were delivered by an amazing cast and the whole thing was awesome to watch. The performances from all the cast were mesmerizing as they totally immersed themselves into the experience. The direction and choreography by Katie Conquest was contemporary and energetic and the energy didn’t drop. Congratulations to this young creative team for producing an exuberant and massively enjoyable evening
