It was great to see the newly reformed Minerva Juniors bring Matilda The Musical Jr. to the stage. With a cast of twenty-eight enthusiastic and energetic performers the show was brought to life. Ava Telfer was strong in her singing and acting in equal measure and the portrayal of the role was extremely well executed. Miss Trunchbull, played by Ben Cooke in his first appearance with Minerva Juniors displayed a wide range of talent and was a very convincing cruel and tyrannical teacher. There were many excellent performances, and all were worthy of their place in this production. It was great to see the use of light and shade and contrast throughout the principal cast from the gentle compassionate role of Miss Honey, the not so nice Wormwoods, the bright and bubbly Lavender, and the chocolate cake-eating Lucy who really had us convinced that she had eaten the whole cake. Many of the cast were performing in their first show, and it was evident that they had all worked hard at rehearsals, and I understand from the committee and production team that a lot of fun was had by all. Each young person played their part in the show, and it was evident that all the cast had worked extremely hard. No show gets to the level of a slick performance without the work of the production team, and the hard work of the Director, Musical Director and Choreographer certainly paid off. The simple but effective set worked well and scene changes moved with ease. There are many other aspects involved in getting a show into the theatre and the work of the production officials, front of house team and the committee ensured that this production of the newly formed Minerva Juniors got them off to a great start in their journey ahead, and it will be great to see the talent of the young people grow as they develop their skills in enjoying all aspects of theatre. Well done!
