On a scorchingly hot day, the temperature outside was only matched by the electric atmosphere inside Horbury Methodist Church. The sell-out crowd, brimming with excitement and anticipation, filled the venue for Ossett Youth Theatre Juniors’ latest production – Matilda Jr.

From the very first notes of the opening number Miracle, the audience was treated to a vibrant and polished performance. We were introduced to a host of colourful characters, none more so than the titular role of Matilda Wormwood, played by Myla Warren. In her first stage outing with OYTJ, Myla was a revelation. A pillar of calm and professionalism, her natural stage presence, nuanced mannerisms, and a sweet, clear vocal tone made her a perfect Matilda. She carried the role with a confidence and maturity well beyond her years.

Among the standout performances were Alice Albiero as the formidable Miss Trunchbull and Harriet Ling as the kind-hearted Miss Honey. As elder stateswomen of the company, their assured performances anchored the show. Alice brought just the right amount of menace to the role of Trunchbull, commanding the stage with fantastic voice projection, particularly during the musical numbers. Harriet, in contrast, gave a heartfelt and gentle portrayal of Miss Honey – her rendition of This Little Girl provided a touching and poignant moment in the show.

Matilda’s schoolmates brought immense energy and charm, showing that teamwork and chemistry can create theatrical magic. Lily Beckett (Bruce), Mary Stone (Lavender), Oliver Bond (Nigel), Olivia Richards (Amanda), Isabella Lamb (Eric), Georgia Kirk (Tommy), and Laila-Rose Barlow (Alice) all shone in their roles. A particular highlight was the number Bruce, where Lily gave a show-stealing performance as the chocolate-cake-consuming Bruce, smearing her face with chocolate while ensuring the cake “magically disappeared” – a moment both hilarious and impressive.

Equally clever and visually engaging was The School Song, in which the cast expertly manoeuvred lettered boxes in perfect time with the lyrics – a feat of coordination that was executed brilliantly.

Matilda’s family – Alfie Higgins (Mr Wormwood), Eva Hargreaves (Mrs Wormwood), and Layton Senior (Michael Wormwood) – brought comedic relief in spades. Their performances were delightfully over-the-top, perfectly capturing the hilariously obnoxious and absurd nature of the Wormwood household.

Credit must also go to the many other supporting cast members, each of whom played a vital role in making the production a success. Their collective enthusiasm and discipline added depth and vibrancy to the performance.

Behind the scenes, the production team ensured everything came together seamlessly. Jessica Winstanley (Director and Choreographer) and Sue Winstanley (Musical Director) led the company with vision and creativity. The clever set design by Alyssia Cooper and Lee Parnham, vibrant costumes by Jayne Gleghorn, and thoughtful props from Lisa Gledhill and Katie Lee all contributed to the show's professional polish.

In short, Matilda Jr was a joyful celebration of youth theatre. It’s heartening to witness so many young performers being nurtured in an environment that fosters both talent and a love for performing. Congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic production – another triumph for Ossett Youth Theatre Juniors.
