Wow! What an amazing show – Milton Musical Society, you are an extraordinarily talented group! Just another compilation of songs from the shows? Not on your nelly! This was in a class of its own. How many concerts have you seen which have their own, specially-written overture and walk-down music, so many sumptuous and appropriate costumes, or such well-directed and choreographed individual numbers?
I always enjoy concerts that include some old favourites but also introduce me to new songs, and I was not disappointed. There was huge variety in the chosen numbers which came from music hall, musicals old and new, comedy duets and even sixties popular music. They were all brought together with a common theme of masquerade – or things not being entirely what they seem, a clever idea that was reflected in the masks used by the cast. Each item was well directed, with people behind the singer acting out the lyrics, emphasising the humour, or well-choreographed dancing.
I normally like to highlight a few numbers for special mention, but in this case they were all so good, it would be invidious to single anyone out. However I will mention Emma Hardy and Issy Whitlock, who led the chorus on their guitars in two numbers. It’s especially nice to see younger members of the company being encouraged into the limelight and shows like this are the ideal vehicles for doing that. Just one question – what happened to the last verse of Puff the Magic Dragon?!
The singers were accompanied by the talented “Al Hume Trio”, with Alastair himself singing one of the numbers. Sound was crystal clear, if a little over amplified at times (but I was sitting in front of a loudspeaker!) The simple, but sparkling and well-lit set needed just a few props and pieces of furniture for some numbers and these were efficiently set and cleared by the stage crew. The whole show flowed really well with just the right amount of introduction from likeable compere Tony Winslow.
The capacity audience clearly enjoyed every moment of the show and required no encouragement to join in clapping and singing. They didn’t want the show to end and neither did I. I’ll say it again – WOW!
