“You coaxed the blues right out of the horn, Mame” You charmed the husk right off of the corn, Mame! A brilliant rendering of the old favourite, which was brought to the screen by Lucille Ball. Brought up to date by SODS interpreted by director Jo Chadwick.
Costumes were authentic and the set was well managed to give the impression of big money!
The lad who played Mame’s nephew Patrick was delectable Stanley Warner and I think he will have a future on stage. Of all the character Karen Long always pleases and she did in this as Mame’s best friend, Vera Charles . The song beautifully sung throughout the show especially applicable to both Patrick and Vera was “My Best Friend” Mark Bendell as the all grown up Patrick was his usual energetic self, joining in the chorus as well as performing his part with gusto.
The small orchestra led by Nigel Ramsden were excellent and non intrusive of the players, also included musicians from popular orchestras in the area.
But the star of the show was of course Mame herself, a truly brilliant rendering by Meryl Bunce and well done indeed to the cast who gave us “All the drive again” to make Stowmarket revive again Mame!!
