There was no better way to spend a cold and wet Sunday afternoon than taking a trip to watch Alderley and Wilmslows fundraising musical offering. Magic of the Musicals, a compilation of some of the best known and not so well known songs from the West End and Broadway from classics such as Oklahoma, Blood Brothers and Les Mis to Dreamgirls, The Secret Garden and Wicked. A varied programme always makes  for an entertaining review.

With a large cast of experienced performers the production moved along nicely showcasing some great talent amongst the company members.

Whilst the quality of performance was overall excellent I thought some of the choreography was perhaps a little too basic even with the restrictions of the size of the venue. “One night Only’ was really fab and I wanted to see more of that standard of dancing.

Some of the numbers did lack energy and I was so willing you on to ‘Sell the Songs’ much more, particularly Uncoupled, All that Jazz and Macavity. On the other end of the scale, there were performances of outstanding quality; 14G, A Bit of Earth, Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’ and Popular.

The les Miserable Medley was excellent even though there were one or two in the company who clearly didn’t know the words – but some really lovely clear harmonies and touching performances in this section.  Well done to Musical Director Mike Bramhall for putting the medley together.

Well done everyone on a great fundraiser – looking forward to seeing you all again soon.
