Maggie May
By Francis Poet
Presented by Wigan Little Theatre
Directed by Nicola Reynolds
It was with some trepidation that I attended this play, having witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of Alzheimer's. However, the play was so cleverly written by Francis Poet and directed with understanding and sensitivity by Nicola Reynolds that any fears were quickly allayed.
The fog, confusion, despair, and anger were far outweighed by the warmth and deep love woven into the fortunes of one ordinary and very relatable family.
‘Maggie’ — Kathryn Green
A very difficult part for any actress, so easy to overplay. Kathryn, you got the balance just right, with depth and subtlety. Particularly memorable when you tell Michael's girlfriend Clare that you would have loved a daughter like her, and when you reveal Michael's heartfelt note, and when you confidently state, "Your brain may forget, but your heart will always feel love." Well done.
‘Jo’ — Veronica Teesdale
An instantly believable connection and chemistry with Maggie, expertly delivering the role with warmth and humour.
‘Gordon’ — Paul Jameson
A lovely, well-crafted performance. Paul creates the gentle, loving husband with understanding and conviction.
‘Michael’ — Chris King
Like many men, Michael finds it difficult to express real feelings and accept his mum's condition. Realistically played, Chris. Well done.
‘Claire’ — Fiona Stewart
Brought depth and authenticity to the role, with instant chemistry with Maggie and believable feelings for Michael despite his flaws.
This was a perfectly cast production with natural movements and creative touches. Director Nicola Reynolds produced a first-class night of theatre.
