This was my first visit to this very talented society and it will not be my last.
Based on the real life events fifty years ago in 1968 it tells the story of the strike by women for equal pay at Fords Dagenham plant and Solihull On Stage brought it to life with a passion. You could tell, from an audience point of view, how much all of the cast enjoyed staging the production, which was slick and very energetic. The set, though simple was very well designed and with some clever scene changes worked well.
Sue Lyons as Rita led the company well. She put so much passion into the role as the leader of the women strikers. She was well supported by Sam Turner as husband Eddie, who is also effected by the strike. Both acted and sounded good. Diane Bennett as shop steward Connie came over well as did Nichola Willetts as Beryl. There were so many outstanding performances in this production there is just not enough space to mention everyone. But I do have to mention Simon Chinery and Suzanne Brittain as Harold Wilson and Barbara Castle. Some great characterisations from both. Also Adam Scott as American boss Mr. Tooley, the true villain of the piece.
Musical Director Mel O'Donnell ensured that the orchestra did not over power the wonderful singing from the company.
The two co-directors, Dani and Sarah (who also looked after the choreography) did a sterling job.
Well done to you all, a first class performance.
