Madagascar: A Musical Adventure brought animated characters to life on stage in this colourful and energetic production, a completely new show for me.

Leading the quartet of Zoo friends was Rio Rennie as Marty the Zebra. Rio captured Marty's adventurous spirit and enthusiasm well, bringing plenty of energy to the role and driving the story forward. Scott Morgan gave a confident performance as Alex the Lion, balancing the character's larger-than-life personality with moments of genuine friendship and vulnerability. Bethany Wylie provided warmth and humour as Gloria the Hippo, while Gregor Paterson's portrayal of Melman the Giraffe delivered many of the character's trademark anxieties and comic moments.

A particular highlight throughout the production was the penguin team. Sophia-Rose Scott (Skipper), Morag Heath (Kowalski), Gilead Chewachong (Private), and Gabriella Cathcart (Rico) worked brilliantly together, displaying excellent comic timing and creating some of the show's funniest moments. Their scenes consistently drew strong audience reactions and provided a real spark whenever they appeared.

Daniel Wylie fully embraced the eccentricity of King Julian with confidence and enthusiasm, making the most of the character's memorable lines and musical moments. He was well supported by Logan McKay as the loyal Maurice and Elise Narsapur as the ever-adoring Mort, both of whom contributed greatly to the dynamic of the lemur kingdom.

Under the direction and choreography of Stuart Whyte, the production moved at a strong pace and made effective use of the stage space. The choreography was well suited to the performers and helped maintain the energy and momentum throughout the show. Musical Director Shona Morgan ensured the musical elements were delivered with confidence, supporting the cast in creating a polished and enjoyable performance.

The production values were particularly impressive. The costumes were fabulous throughout, helping to define the characters while adding colour, personality, and visual impact to every scene. The set was well proportioned and thoughtfully designed, creating a sense of scale without overwhelming the performers. Its versatility allowed for smooth transitions between locations and added greatly to the magic and atmosphere of the production.

The production also benefited from a committed ensemble who helped create the world of Madagascar through energetic performances and strong stage presence. Together the cast succeeded in delivering an enjoyable theatrical experience and the audience loved it.

Congratulations to everyone involved.
