Wowza! What an incredible first night for HALIFAX LIGHT OPERA SOCIETY JUNIORS. So much energy, such bright, happy and engaging characters. This show is a bundle of fun, filled with great songs and it goes at such a fast pace.
I always anticipate a fantastic show from this talented society and they certainly met all my expectations.
The set, built and decorated in collaboration with Calderdale College students, (I love that idea) takes us across the globe from the Zoo to Madagascar and even drops off to take the penguins “home”. Lighting gives us some great atmospherics and the party starts from the first note of this fantastic score. Tom Devine at the helm as MD keeps the young cast on track and pulls out the best from them in terms of vocals. The songs, although not well known to me, are up-beat and nostalgic in equal measure, demonstrating a range of styles for the different groups of characters.
The costumes are simply incredible – some so simple, others intricately detailed and all blend to give such a colourful scene, depicting a range of animals with a few humans thrown in for good measure. Make up for lots of the creatures is literally “spot on”
