Tayside Opera’s production of Donizetti's "Lucia Di Lammermoor" proved to be a compelling evening of operatic drama. Held in the excellent Space Theatre, the performance was a showcase of the dedication and talent of a passionate ensemble, delivering a memorable rendition of this classic tragedy.
Moira Docherty, cast as Lucia, brought a heartfelt intensity to her role. Her portrayal of Lucia’s emotional turmoil, especially in the famous "Mad Scene," was both touching and convincing capturing the character’s fragility and despair effectively. I understand that Moira is stepping back from playing romantic leads and what a phenomenal performance to end with. Bravo!
Theodore Rankin-Foudraine, playing Edgardo, delivered a commendable performance with his clear and resonant voice. His emotional delivery in the final act was particularly striking, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
Brandon Liston-Smith, in the role of Lord Enrico Ashton, gave a strong and assertive performance, successfully embodying the character's complex mix of guilt and determination.
Russell Malcolm, as Raimondo Bidebent, provided a steady and compassionate presence, his rich baritone adding depth to his character.
David Clark, playing Normanno, contributed well to the unfolding drama with his crisp performance.
Elaine Young as Ailsa and Euan Smith as Arturo Bucklaw rounded out the cast with solid performances, adding to the production's overall quality.
The set design was simple yet effective, utilising creative lighting to evoke the opera's dark and moody atmosphere. While the limited budget was evident, the smart use of space and props compensated for it, maintaining the audience's immersion in the story.
The impressive orchestra, under the direction of an enthusiastic Richard Johnston, performed Donizetti’s score with vigor, succeeding in bringing out the emotional nuances of the music, supporting the singers well and adding depth to the performance. "Lucia Di Lammermoor" was an impressive effort from an amateur troupe, reflecting their hard work and passion for opera.
The experience was engaging and heartfelt, making for an enjoyable evening for both opera aficionados and newcomers like myself alike.
Many thanks for the invitation.
