Love`s Travails is a concert put together by the award winning composer and conductor Henry Page for Saddleworth Musical Society. It was exciting to walk into the hall and see so many musicians tuning up their instruments ready to play for us , I was also interested to see how Saddleworth Musical Society would project with such a wall of musical sound. I need not have been concerned as they more than held their own They sang with confidence and attack and hit the notes with purity and precision . The “Irish Blessing“ by Bob Chillcott was stunningly performed. Henry then took us on a jazz journey from Scarborough via Ireland to Australia. Saddleworth MS kept great pace and transported us with ease as they tackled the very different note timings of jazz. Some rousing songs from Carmen came next which certainly pleased some of my seated companions as they hummed along. The second half consisted of a Porgy and Bess Compilation with a guest appearance from James Connolly. I must mention the soloists from Saddleworth MS that stepped out into the spotlight during this performance Jane Reynolds, Martin Bradbury, Carol Hunter, Mirriam Lawton, Carol Hunter and Debbie Williams. They all sang with confidence and clarity, I really enjoyed seeing the breath control and experiencing the personality and performance coming across during the solo`s.
I am thrilled that you can still surprise me with such hidden gems. Thank you for inviting me, I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
