What a lovely evening we had watching and listening to “Loudly Let the Trumpet Bray (a Gilbert and Sullivan Gala Concert) presented as a collaborative effort by The Hoghton Players Gilbert and Sullivan Society and The Hesketh Bank Silver Band. Both groups performed sets on their own and also joined together to present some very enjoyable pieces of music for our entertainment. A great deal of thought and hard work appeared to have gone into filling the programme with a good selection from the works of William S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan which included choruses from their famous Savoy operas that are loved by many, all sung well by “The Hoghton Players”, with what appeared to be a great deal of enjoyment, they were conducted by Musical Director Ian Dunning accompanied by Ann Dickinson, also Included in their sets were a number of enjoyable solos, duets and quartets all performed well with confidence. The audience were also treated to pieces from “The Hesketh Bank Silver Band” under the direction of Musical Director Alastair Burrows assisted by Alan Johnson. As well as some Gilbert and Sullivan numbers these sets included among others, Charlie Chaplin's Smile, The Lost Chord arranged by Gordon Langford and the ever popular The Floral Dance which brought to mind the wonderful Terry Wogan who we lost so suddenly a short while ago.  However, one of the highlights of the evening for me was when the singers and the band joined together and performed “The March of the Peers” from Iolanthe, which is a rousing piece of music and made a wonderful beginning to the second half of the programme. The evening’s entertainment was finished off with the singers and the band performing “When the Foeman Bares his Steel” (The Pirates of Penzance) both of the afore mentioned numbers were a great example of the quality of the programme

Well done to all involved in arranging and performing in this concert, for all your hard work and for a very enjoyable evenings entertainment and thank you very much for inviting us and making us so welcome. We look forward to seeing you for your next production.
