There is nothing like a new musical to set pulses racing at Harlequin, so “Loserville” had to be on the agenda for this talented and progressive Company. Set in the town of Loserville in America, the story centres around a computer geek Michael Dork (played by Jack McNeilage) who works with Arch Industries and is trying to develop software to enable computers to “talk” to each other. His “arch” enemy is Eddie (Neil Reoch), son of the owner of Arch Industries but Michael has a friend in Lucas Lloyd (Ewan Pringle) who is writing a novel to be called Star Wars. Holly Manson (Rachel Montgomerie) who wants to be the first female astronaut begins to help Michael with his work but over time, both Michael and Lucas fall for Holly. Intrigue ensues with Eddie promising to have Lucas’s book published and then discarding it into a bin.   However, Holly achieves the necessary break-through with the computer programme which results as Eddie being shown as a fraud and Lucas’s book is to be considered for a film.
The show has many musical numbers and minor principals but probably no major songs likely to last in the public mind. It is certainly a piece for our time of computers, geeks and electronic communication and for those involved in that world. Nevertheless, it was a show worth investigating and staging and most certainly, the cast and production team deserve praise for the considerable efforts expended in bringing this type of show to Eastwood.
