Many thanks to Curtain Call for inviting me along to see their showcase ‘Look to the West End Sky’ at the Barnes Theatre at Shrewsbury School on Saturday 4th November. This production combined all of the different groups and was a showcase of musical theatre, singing, dancing and performing.

I was not surprised by the extraordinary ability and talent of the performers at Curtain Call, having seen all of their shows over the past year. What I really liked about this show was that it provided an opportunity for performers that I hadn’t noticed previously to have their moment in the spotlight. The dancers showed a good level of technique and breath control along with a great amount of energy.

There were a variety of dance styles from street and contemporary but my favourite from the evening was the tap number, which was well executed and stood out from all of the other numbers due to its difference in dance style.

Throughout the show there were a number of technical mishaps with microphones missing or not turned on or backing tracks being to loud for the performers voice but I am not surprised due to how busy this show was and how many performers were involved.

Our musical journey took us through a variety of shows, Charlie and the Chocolate factory to Six The Musical, Crazy for You to Les Misérables. There were many numbers that I had not come across before so this for me and many of the audience members was an opportunity to expand our musical knowledge.

The memoriable moments for me personally were the group number for Six The Musical with all tweleve performers, the impressive dance routine performed on what I can only describe as ‘Stripper Heels’ and ‘I can’t be bothered now’ from Crazy for You.

Benjamin Connor Davies is great at guiding his students to perform to their abilities and to allow them to step up to many difficult and show stopping numbers.

It was really lovely to be part of a very appreciative audience and there was a real sense of belonging to the Curtain Call family and friends.

I hope that the audience dug deep to contribute to the collections on the evening for Severn Hospice and the West Midland Air Ambulance two very worthy while charities.

In summary a really enjoyable evening showcasing the talents of the students and friends of Curtain Call.
