This comedy mystery play written by SABOS’ own chair Chris Taylor and developed in group workshops provided a refreshing and entertaining evening. This was a fundraising event for the company where 20 members could show their acting abilities in creating roles in early 20th century period. All had been invited to a function and had been directed to take a train from Platform 13 - an ominous number. There was a wide range of characters with aristocrats, gangsters, hustlers, supposed railway personnel, a group of young socialites as well as a Poirot type investigator and Detective Inspector. All were seemingly innocent yet the first act ended with two murders. Gangster Tony Gambolina interacted well with his side kicks Freddy Knuckles and Bonnie Clydekick dropping some lovely comic lines while the clever machinations of Maggie ‘Magpie’ Tyler and sister Billie Biscuits caught us all. The young socialites were not as innocent as they seemed and Jules Oiseau gave a splendid French accent to accentuate his deductions. Even the aristocratic miens of Princess Hildegard and Lady Ursula turned out not to be what they seemed. The names were a delight in themselves especially Lady Sybil Shatterghast. All worked well together and moved towards the unveiling of the murderer - which I can say I didn’t expect at all. The staging was simple with railway station Platform at the forefront which then opened to reveal the railway carriages. The cast projected well and were confident with all their lines, leaving clues which only became apparent at the end. Good use was made of the space. Costuming was well characterised and lighting was effective. This was a light hearted and entertaining evening and lived up to its punned title of ‘Loco-Motive’.
