This is a very clever, witty and well written black comedy about a road to be built through the grounds of a stately home and the efforts of the chatelaine Lady Sheila Boothroyd to prevent it and threatening to commit suicide if she fails.

Pat Cowey as Lady Boothroyd played this role with style; with the light and shade that was required and comes so effortlessly to this fine actress. She was a pleasure to watch and was hardly ever off stage. Mark Blaber as General Sir William Boothroyd excelled as the bumbling, eccentric husband to Lady Sheila and his appearance in full uniform complete with busby added to the funny and lovable character.

Lee Haddow as Hubert Boothroyd M.P.  their son and heir, was not strong enough in his character to ring true as a politician .He needed much more oomph, firm in his beliefs and showing more emotion etc. His voice was rather monotone, and on the night I attended he needed far too many prompts which detracted from the characterisation even more. His wife, Maud Boothroyd was played by Nicola Brice who did her best, but needed more of a build up to her mood swings. Her character did not convince.

Courtney Potter as the Grand-daughter played the part very well, showing a genuine affection for her grandmother and along with her boyfriend Simon Green (James Phillips) made a very convincing couple.

Tony Christopher as Robertson the butler got it just right and had a very expressive face. A fairly brief appearance by Raymond Tongue as the Rev Trevor Simmonds was beautifully done, with clarity and humour.

The set was truly good and detailed and costumes to match. The night I attended, the Prompt seemed to have a major role and was over keen, prompting during obviously scripted pauses. Sir William was prompted, as he was about to greet someone who hadn’t even got on stage through the door from the wings!!

The director Nick Lawrence put great touches into the play along with music that was so apt for the period. The audience was very appreciative on what was, in the main, a delightful evening of entertainment.
