KYDZ (Keighley Youth Theatre) thrives on creating and performing their “own” productions and once again they have delivered an extremely powerful performance dealing with delicate subjects that many people would fear to tackle in their latest production of “Living Louder”.

The production was a very cleverly written piece (by Jamie Knights who also directed it).  With a cast of over 20 young people aged 8 upwards, everyone gave strong performances.  There was great use of backing tracks and very poignant and meaningful lyrics were added to make these very clear strong vocal performances throughout and really enhanced the storyline.

The piece was set in a hospital (on a childrens ward).  We saw examples of everyday “life” unfold before us – hard hitting story lines including cancer, terminal illness, death, abuse, love, hate, trust, friendships torn apart – extremely powerful storytelling from start to finish.  The KYDZ really brought this whole thing “to life” – I literally felt like I was watching an episode of Casualty at times, there was so much drama!

KYDZ once again continue to push boundaries – to tell those stories that others would shy away from, but whilst we think that these issues would probably only be tackled in a TV drama such as Casualty or Holby City this talented group does what it does best – it includes experiences, improvisation, and inspiration in everything they do.  They tackle these issues “head on”.

With a great Production, Backstage and Admin team as support this group goes from strength to strength giving young people their chance to shine and tell so many important stories and issues about modern day living.  It was great to see techniques that some of the youngsters had learned in a Youth Workshop only a few weeks before being used in this production.

It was my absolutely pleasure to present Jamie with a 15 year NODA Long Service Award.  I have seen Jamie grow and flourish through 9 or so of those 15 years, and I really hope that you keep up your writing skills Jamie.  You have a real talent there!

To everyone at KYDZ - long may your enthusiasm and energy continue!
