A fun show which marked a change of style for this Society and they relished the opportunity to try something different. The show generated a lot of interest and some new young members. Of course, the show is dependent on the man eating plant and this was a stunner made by Cy Dudley, Neil Franklin and Stage 1 Creative Services Ltd. who are to be congratulated on their work. The set, a run down flower shop on Skid Row, was appropriate and provided a good backdrop to the varying sized plants. Scaffolding at either side of the stage was used susccessfully by the the backing group of 8 singers who provided a good sound throughout. The Chorus seemed to have no problems with their parts of the down & outs and joined the fun with great gusto. Seymour (Jonty Wilson) gave a very sympathetic portrayal of the poor young man who finds the plant and has to keep it alive. Hannah Webster (Audrey, the other member of staff), Richard Goodall (Mr. Mushnik, the shop owner) and Colin Espinal (Orin, the Dentist) all gave well rounded and entertaining performances. The Voice was played & sung very well by Catherine Hopkins (the first time I had heard a female Voice & it was a very successful performance). The Puppeteer (Cy Dudley) co-ordinated the movements with the singing with great panache. The sound, lighting and properties were good and well used. The small band of 5 provided good controlled support. Projection and characterisations were very good in a well directed show which the whole audience thoroughly enjoyed and showed their appreciation with some very enthusiastic applause.
