This was an excellent production from the group, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the show.
There were some lovely performances, particularly from Beth McGarry, playing Audrey, and Chris Simpson playing the hapless Seymour . They blended very well together, Beth as the downtrodden girlfriend, and Chris, totally besotted by Audrey. There interaction together was very convincing, and their singing of ‘Somewhere That’s Green’ and ‘Suddenly Seymour’ was very well received by the enthusiastic audience. Alex Clark, playing his first major role with the company was very good as shop owner Mushnik, as was Aron Armstrong as the dentist from hell and woman beater, Orin. Lisa Buchanan, Kayleigh Cullen and Louise Morton, as Chiffon, Crystal and Ronette, respectively were an excellent close harmony trio, very similar to their 1960’s stage name groups.
Special mention must go to Shaun Donald, as the plant manipulator, a very difficult role to play, never seen but so important to the plot, and Dave Flitcroft as the voice of Audrey 2, again unseen, but his diction was superb. The chorus performed well, and the choreography was very effective.
The set was fairly simple, but suited the stage and the plant was brilliant .Lighting was very good, but a down side for me was sitting right beside the brass and woodwind, they overpowered the singers from time to time.
This was a splendid evening’s entertainment from the Theatre Group, congratulations to all concerned, and I look forward to seeing them again at their Showcase Extravaganza in September. Thanks to everyone concerned for a lovely evening.
