This popular musical loosely based on the 1960 film about a hapless florist shop worker raising a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh proved to be an excellent choice for MLO this year. Returning to the company after a period of absence, Gerard McGeachy was suitably cast at Mr. Mushnik the Jewish owner of the failing flower shop and in his first show with the group, Iain Runciman provided a great performance as Seymour, Mushnik’s menial employee and owner of the carnivorous plant, Audrey II. As fellow shop assistant Audrey, Nicole Black brilliantly portrayed the gum-snapping, bleached-blond secret love of Seymour’s life and was joined by David O’Brien as her sadistic boyfriend and entertaining Dentist, Orin Scrivello. Liam A McKinstray played Audrey II, operated by Steven Weir. With a smaller cast on stage, the company made full use of the limited space available which I felt worked particularly well. With music set in the style of early 1960s, the company delivered many well-known numbers, including the title song, ‘Skid Row (Downtown)’, ‘Somewhere That's Green’, and ‘Suddenly, Seymour’ with great ease, brilliantly supported by the band under the direction of Patrick McClair. Given the various issues the group was faced with leading up to the show, all involved should be pleased with the outcome in particular Graeme Black in this his first time as Production Director.
