This choice was a departure for CMS from its usual style of show, but a successful one. Andrew Scott’s debut with CMS as Seymour proved to be a good choice, in a part he had apparently classed as a dream role. His opposite number, Fiona MacCallum as Audrey showed her experience after many years with the Club, having started as a Junior Section member aged 12. Both, in fact, hold HND Certificates in various Theatre Arts, which is becoming more and more a feature of performers these days, which can only be good for amateur theatre. Gary Lawson (Orin the dentist) had also longed for the chance to perform this role, which he did with relish and effect, maltreating Audrey whilst imbibing in his gas habit. Lynsey Hayes (Chiffon), Nikki Nairn (Crystal) and Gemma Collins (Ronette)mde a pretty trio which added to musical standards of this group, while Allan Ayre, the kindly Mr. Muschnik, owner of the plant shop, added a certain gravitas. The plant (Audrey II) operated by Ian Stewart and voiced by David Brown, was homegrown and most effective in this production. There was a chorus of customers and down’n’outs, and minor roles for the Interviewer and the botanical ‘experts’ who arrived at the end to take cuttings, after Audrey II had had a veritable feast with most of the cast. Thank goodness it’s just a story, which was thoroughly enjoyed by audience, and me.
